Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions people ask about Akluma, before and after signing up.

Is Akluma a savings tracker or a budget app?
Akluma is a savings tracker, not a budget app. It does not track your spending or sort it into categories. Each savings goal gets its own piggy bank, where you record what you put aside for it. With a plan, Akluma turns your goal into a savings schedule and emails you on each saving day. With a classic piggy bank, you add or take out money whenever you like, and email reminders are optional.
Is Akluma free? Are there ads?
Yes, Akluma is free right now. You do not need a credit card to sign up. There are no ads. If any of this is going to change, I will email you in advance.
Do I have to connect my bank account?
No, Akluma never connects to a bank and never asks for your bank login or card details. Since nothing is linked, you can use it with any bank, several accounts, or cash at home. You enter each amount yourself. With a plan, reminders tell you when to save, and one larger amount can cover several saving days at once.
Does Akluma hold my money or pay interest?
No. Akluma does not hold, move, or invest your money, so it pays no interest. Your savings stay where you keep them: in a bank account or as cash at home. A piggy bank in Akluma is a record of what you put aside, not an account. While your piggy bank is active, record any money you take out of your savings as a withdrawal in that piggy bank so the totals match.
How does Akluma work out how much to save?
With a plan, you enter your goal and choose either a target date or an amount to save each time. If you choose a date, Akluma calculates how much to save each time and rounds it up, so the total may be slightly above your goal. If you enter how much you can save each time, Akluma tells you when you will reach your goal. Either way, you can compare the daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly options available for your plan before choosing one. If you have already saved some money, enter it as a starting amount so Akluma plans only for the rest.
What's the difference between a plan and a classic piggy bank?
With a plan, you set a goal and choose either a target date or an amount to save each time. Akluma creates a schedule, emails you on each saving day, and shows when you will reach your goal. A classic piggy bank has no schedule: you add or take out money whenever you like, with an optional target and reminder. You choose the type when you create a piggy bank and cannot change it later, but you can have both types at once. A classic piggy bank cannot be paused and stays open until you mark it done, empty it, or cancel it.
Which currencies can I use?
Akluma supports 152 currencies, and you choose one for each piggy bank when you create it. You can save in several currencies at once, but you cannot change a piggy bank's currency later. Your account currency is the default for new piggy banks. For currencies normally used without decimals, such as the Japanese yen, enter whole amounts; other currencies allow up to two decimal places. Akluma does not convert between currencies, so totals are shown separately for each one.
Can I save for several goals at once? Is there a limit?
Yes. Each goal gets its own piggy bank, and you can have up to 10 active or paused piggy banks in total. Piggy banks that are done or cancelled do not count toward the limit, and neither do drafts. To see several goals together, group their piggy banks in a vault, which shows a combined total for each currency. Your dashboard also shows your goals and savings for each currency.
Why use Akluma instead of a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet can track your savings if you set it up and keep it up to date. Akluma calculates the amount and date, lists every saving day, sends email reminders, and shows whether your plan will still reach your goal. It also works on your phone, with no formulas to write. Either way, you need to record what you put aside. A spreadsheet is still a better fit if you want your own layout, need to work offline, or want to export your data, which Akluma cannot do yet.
Can I use Akluma for sinking funds?
Yes. A sinking fund is money put aside for a known future cost, such as yearly insurance, car repairs, or a trip. A plan with a target date is built for this: Akluma works out how much to put aside each time so the money is there by that date. Give each fund its own piggy bank, and group them in a vault to see them together. For an expense that comes up every year, start a new plan once the current one is done.
Can I use Akluma on my phone and other devices?
Yes, Akluma works in any web browser on a phone or computer, using the same account across devices. On Android, you can also install the Akluma app from Google Play. There is no iPhone app, but Akluma works in Safari on an iPhone. Your piggy banks are saved in your account, not on your phone, so you lose nothing if you change phones. Akluma needs an internet connection to work.
Can I try it without an account?
Yes, you can set up a piggy bank from start to finish without an account and see a plan's full savings schedule. To save the piggy bank and get reminders, you need a free account. You can sign up with a code sent by email, with Google, or with a password. Your plan stays in the same browser while you sign up. Once a plan is ready, you can also save it as a draft with just your email address.
Is my data safe, and can I delete it?
Akluma never sees your bank or card details, and I never sell your data. Your data is stored in Paris, France, apart from pictures you send in the chat. Privacy-friendly analytics that use no cookies count visitors who are not signed in and count each new signup once. The Delete Account button on your Profile page deletes your account and its contents immediately, with remaining copies in backups and email logs deleted within 45 days. There is no export button yet, so email me at contact@akluma.com before deleting your account if you want a copy of your data.
When do reminder emails arrive, and can I pick the day?
Reminder emails arrive at 9 am in your local time on each saving day of a plan. With a weekly or monthly plan, you can pick the day, such as the day after payday, and change it later while the plan is active. There is no option for every two weeks or twice a month. A classic piggy bank can have an optional weekly or monthly reminder at the same time, on a day you choose. If emails arrive at the wrong time, send me a message in the chat, and I will correct the time zone Akluma saved when you signed up.
How do I stop reminder emails?
To stop all reminders, open your Profile page, go to Notification Preferences, and untick the email checkbox. The change is saved right away. To stop reminders for one plan, pause it; reminders stay off until you resume it. You can also cancel the plan, but cancellation is permanent. For a classic piggy bank, turn off the reminder in its settings.
What if I miss a saving day?
The missed saving stays on your schedule, and the dashboard shows your plan in its "Past due savings" card. You can mark it as saved later, with the amount you actually put aside. If a later saving is still to come, you can also skip this one: Akluma spreads its amount over the savings still to come, keeping your goal and end date the same. A skip cannot be undone. For a longer break, pause the plan; when you resume it, Akluma gives new dates to the missed savings and any pending savings after them.
I entered the wrong amount. How do I fix it?
You cannot edit or delete an entry, but you can correct it. For a plan, untick any saving you marked by mistake, then mark it again with the correct amount if needed. If you took too much out of a plan, add it back and choose Extra money when Akluma asks what the money is for. For a classic piggy bank, take out an amount added by mistake, or add back an amount taken out by mistake. You can make corrections while the piggy bank is active, but once an entry completes a plan, that completion cannot be undone.
Can I change a piggy bank after creating it?
You can rename a piggy bank and edit its details at any time. For an active plan, Recalculate Saving Schedule lets you change how much you save each time, which may also change the number of remaining scheduled savings and the end date. You cannot change a plan's goal amount, but you can cancel the plan and start a new one using what you have already saved as the starting amount. For a classic piggy bank, you can change or remove the target while it is active. You cannot change the currency, the type of piggy bank, or a plan's saving frequency.
Can I delete a piggy bank?
You cannot delete a piggy bank, but you can cancel it while it is active or paused, and cancellation is permanent. Cancelling stops its reminders, frees up a place within the limit of 10 piggy banks, and removes it from its vault. It stays in your list with its history, marked as cancelled. If you need a break from a plan, pause it instead. When you no longer need a classic piggy bank, you can mark it done or empty it.
What happens when I reach my goal?
For a plan, Akluma automatically marks the piggy bank as done, records the date you reached your goal, and stops its reminders. When a classic piggy bank reaches its target, it shows a small celebration and turns off its reminder, then stays open until you mark it done or empty it. Piggy banks that are done stay in your list and no longer count toward the limit of 10. Your money is still where you kept it, ready to spend. Akluma does not send an email when you reach a goal.
Can I share a piggy bank with my partner?
Not yet. For now, each piggy bank belongs to one account. I plan to add shared piggy banks, where two or more people save toward one goal. Until then, each of you can keep a piggy bank for your own share of the goal.
